I find that most of my clients struggle when it comes to seeing or choosing color. Sometimes that is part of the reason why they hire me. They can’t visualize, they don’t know what the outcome will be and they are a little afraid.
This quote is perfect in describing my design business model and how I like to work with my clients. Whether selecting paint colors or going through the design process with an Interior Designer, it can be scary if you’ve never done it or don’t know exactly what to expect.
That’s why I operate my design practice the way that I do. Everything I do, the reason I do it and how I do it helps to TAKE THE FEAR OUT OF THE PROCESS. I don’t like surprises and I like to know the ins and outs of why certain decisions are made, where things come from, and basic logistics.
If I can educate my clients along the way and throughout the process, show them why a color will or will not work or why a specific piece was selected, that eases the anxiety of the unknown. It makes for a more enjoyable process and working relationship.
One of the ways designers can help clients see their vision is of course through visuals, sketches, samples and swatches. And being able to verbally articulate why and how something will work is so important to having a successful project outcome.
One of the ways I benefit my clients is by constantly educating myself, improving my skills, and honing my craft. A few years ago I attended Maria Killam’s color course and became a True Color Expert. It gave me a new perspective on how to select color, pair colors, and most importantly to me how to articulate the WHY of color choices.
Starting Monday, I’m off to attend another fantastic training course in Atlanta taught by the very talented Kate Smith of Sensational Color. It’s going to be 3 long, exciting days of intensive training, exercises and interactive learning……I cannot wait!!
I will be posting here some of what I’m learning so you can learn right along with me. Be sure to check back next week. I know I’ll come away with a whole new perspective, new tools to share with my clients and new tips to share with all of you too!
XOXO
