My Top 12 Bedside Table Must Haves

In my experience, designing Master Bedrooms can be a very personal affair and each project brings it own unique needs and challenges. There are so many questions to ask and details to uncover to assure a perfect fit and out come. The space must be comfortable, functional and aesthetically pleasing. I find when it comes to function, one of the most important things to get right is making sure that I accommodate each clients specific needs at their bedside table or nightstand. If a beautiful space does not function properly it’s a failure.

When it comes to figuring out what to include at each bedside I first determine all of the possible tasks my clients may need to do at one point or another. Do they read, write or journal in bed, watch TV, work on the computer, talk on the phone, and what are their specific storage needs near their bed. Of course not everything should be displayed. Something’s are better left tucked away or an undesired cluttered look can happen and we never want that. (When you’re dreaming of creating your restful sanctuary, I’m sure clutter was not part of the equation.)

When compiling the final look and function of each bedside table, chest or nightstand I design, I always go through My Top 12 Bedside Table Must Haves to determine the perfect fit for each client. My list includes:

#1 Light Source: This can also include candles as an option in addition to a lamp or wall sconce.

#2 Books or Magazines: Not only functional for reading enjoyment but can also add height to objects for display.

#3 Bowl or Basket: Some open or closed object to contain smaller things like pens, reading glasses, jewelry, coins, etc.

#4 Note Pad & Pen or Journal: Great to have if you wake up in the middle of the night and need to get your thoughts down on paper.

#5 Alarm Clock Source: This more than likely will be your smart phone, but for those of us who are old school, there are some great looking options available.

#6 Water Carafe: A great way to stay hydrated throughout the night without leaving your bed. They are functional and very aesthetically pleasing.

#7 Favorite Photos or Artwork: Bedrooms are the perfect private retreat for displaying family photos that are too personal for the main rooms of the home.

#8 Fresh Flowers or Greenery: Floral can add softness, color and fragrance to what can typically be a very rigid table scape.

#9 Tissue: If you prone to allergies then this addition is a no brainer. Not being a fan of tissue box covers, I would opt to conceal them in a drawer for easy access.

#10 Fan: Table top fans have come along way but I still love the aesthetic of the old antique form. This beats the alternative of a big bulky ceiling fan in the room.

#11 Tray: Use a tray to contain most everything on your nightstand. If you have a functional need to have many things available group them in a tray.

#12 Phone, Music Source or Docking/ Charging Station: With our ever growing use of electronics, this is a must especially is you’re one to work in bed.
