5 Tips to Designing a Dramatically Unique Nursery

With all of the amazing baby and children’s boutiques and online stores it’s never been easier to pull together an amazing Nursery or Kids Room for your little ones. You can literally get everything you need all in one place, a one-stop-shop if you will. But what if you didn’t want to create a room that looked like everyone else’s? What if you wanted to “DESIGN” something truly magical and unique?

I’ve put together my Top 5 Tips to Designing a Dramatically Unique Nursery (or Children’s Room). If you follow these five steps (or even just one or two of them), you’re sure to create a space that is truly one-of-a-kind and most importantly a true reflection of you!

And for those of you looking to take your rooms to the next level, be sure to check out my BONUS TIP at the end of this post…..it will give you a leg up in creating your very best space!

{TIP #1} Bump it up with Black: Yes, you can use black in a child’s room or nursery. If you’re feeling bold you can paint an entire wall or two and even if you’re not, try using black as an accent color to add drama and depth to your space. The best thing about Black is that it goes with anything and any color. Go ahead…..be brave!!

{TIP #2 } Blend Bold Patterns and Geometrics: Try using large scale patterns to add whimsy and boldness to your rooms. Large stripes, chevron, harlequin and lattice are a few of my favorites…forget the polka dots and plaid for a little while and try something new.

{TIP #3} Create Curiosity with Color: Use unexpected color combinations to set off a unique vibe in your space. Some of my favorite current color combinations are mint and coral (below), chartreuse and peach, yellow and gray, orange and navy, cream and black. Think about some of your favorite hot color trends. Why not try them in a Nursery!

{TIP # 4} Mix up your Merchandise: This is probably one of the toughest tips to follow. I would challenge you to NOT purchase everything in one location (or even two locations), one boutique or even one online vendor. Challenge yourself to purchase items for your rooms at many, many places. If you buy everything from Pottery Barn Kids or Rosenberry Rooms, it’s going to look like you did. Even though your space maybe new, it should look collected and thoughtfully selected. If you’re looking for a quick one-stop-shop solution, chances are you’re room will reflect it.

{TIP #5} Build Your Own Bedding: There is nothing like creating custom bedding and window treatments for your custom feel. Selecting your own fabrics and style details are the ultimate in assuring you compile something truly unique and special. If a custom workroom is not in your reach, there are other options. Try a semi-custom approach at Carousel Designs. You can design your own crib bedding by selecting your favorites from over 300 high quality fabrics.
